चौघड़िया दिन एवं रात के शुभ-अशुभ समय जानने की एक सरल पद्धति है। सूर्योदय से सूर्यास्त तक के दिन को आठ बराबर भागों में और सूर्यास्त से अगले सूर्योदय तक की रात को आठ बराबर भागों में बाँटा जाता है। हर भाग लगभग चार घड़ी (करीब डेढ़ घंटे) का होता है — इसी से नाम पड़ा ‘चौ-घड़िया’। सात प्रकार हैं: अमृत, शुभ, लाभ, चर, उद्वेग, काल और रोग। / Choghadiya is a simple way of reading the good and bad hours of a day. The day, from sunrise to sunset, is divided into eight equal parts, and the night, from sunset to the next sunrise, into eight more. Each part lasts about four ghadi — roughly an hour and a half — which is where the name ‘cho-ghadiya’ comes from. There are seven kinds: Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Udveg, Kaal and Rog.

अमृत, शुभ और लाभ शुभ चौघड़िया हैं; चर सामान्य है और यात्रा के लिए अच्छा माना जाता है। उद्वेग, काल और रोग अशुभ माने जाते हैं और इनमें नया या मांगलिक कार्य आरंभ नहीं किया जाता। / Amrit, Shubh and Labh are the good choghadiya; Char is neutral and is considered fine for travel. Udveg, Kaal and Rog are held inauspicious, and new or ceremonial work is not begun in them.

सूर्यास्त के समय में से सूर्योदय का समय घटाकर दिनमान निकालें और उसे आठ से भाग दें — यही दिन के एक चौघड़िया की अवधि है। उदाहरण: सूर्योदय 6:30 और सूर्यास्त 18:30 हो तो दिनमान 12 घंटे और हर चौघड़िया 90 मिनट का — पहला 6:30 से 8:00, दूसरा 8:00 से 9:30, इसी क्रम में। रात के लिए सूर्यास्त से अगले सूर्योदय तक के समय को आठ से भाग दें। पहला चौघड़िया वार से तय होता है और शेष एक निश्चित क्रम में आते हैं। / Subtract the sunrise time from the sunset time to get the length of the day, and divide it by eight — that is how long one day choghadiya lasts. For example, with sunrise at 6:30 and sunset at 18:30 the day is 12 hours and each choghadiya 90 minutes: the first runs 6:30 to 8:00, the second 8:00 to 9:30, and so on. For the night, divide the time from sunset to the next sunrise by eight. The weekday decides the first choghadiya and the rest follow in a fixed order.

दिन का पहला चौघड़िया — रविवार: उद्वेग, सोमवार: अमृत, मंगलवार: रोग, बुधवार: लाभ, गुरुवार: शुभ, शुक्रवार: चर, शनिवार: काल। रात का पहला चौघड़िया — रविवार: शुभ, सोमवार: चर, मंगलवार: काल, बुधवार: उद्वेग, गुरुवार: अमृत, शुक्रवार: रोग, शनिवार: लाभ। उदाहरण के लिए शुक्रवार को दिन का क्रम है: चर, लाभ, अमृत, काल, शुभ, रोग, उद्वेग, चर। / The first day choghadiya is — Sunday: Udveg, Monday: Amrit, Tuesday: Rog, Wednesday: Labh, Thursday: Shubh, Friday: Char, Saturday: Kaal. The first night choghadiya is — Sunday: Shubh, Monday: Char, Tuesday: Kaal, Wednesday: Udveg, Thursday: Amrit, Friday: Rog, Saturday: Labh. On a Friday, for example, the day runs: Char, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, Udveg, Char.

यात्रा एवं प्रस्थान के लिए चर चौघड़िया सबसे उपयुक्त माना जाता है; अमृत, शुभ और लाभ भी अच्छे हैं। उद्वेग, काल और रोग में यात्रा आरंभ करने से बचा जाता है। / Char is considered the most suitable choghadiya for travel and setting out; Amrit, Shubh and Labh are good too. Starting a journey in Udveg, Kaal or Rog is avoided.

ये तीन ऐसे खंड हैं जिन्हें शुभ कार्य के लिए टाला जाता है, भले ही वे किसी शुभ चौघड़िया में पड़ें। वार वेला और काल वेला दिन में आती हैं और काल रात्रि रात में। काल वेला सदैव दिन के काल चौघड़िया पर और काल रात्रि रात के लाभ चौघड़िया पर पड़ती है; वार वेला का स्थान वार के अनुसार बदलता है। तालिका में ये नाम संबंधित चौघड़िया के नीचे लिखे हैं। / They are three stretches avoided for auspicious work even when they fall inside a good choghadiya. Vaar Vela and Kaal Vela come in the day and Kaal Ratri at night. Kaal Vela always sits on the day's Kaal choghadiya and Kaal Ratri on the night's Labh choghadiya; where Vaar Vela falls changes with the weekday. In the table each is printed under the choghadiya it falls on.

राहु काल भी दिन का आठवाँ भाग ही होता है, इसलिए वह सदैव किसी एक चौघड़िया के साथ पूरा मेल खाता है। जो लोग राहु काल मानते हैं वे उस चौघड़िया को — शुभ होने पर भी — छोड़कर अगला शुभ चौघड़िया लेते हैं। तालिका में उस पर ‘राहु काल’ लिखा रहता है। / Rahu Kaal is itself one eighth of the day, so it always lines up exactly with one choghadiya. Those who observe Rahu Kaal skip that choghadiya — even a good one — and take the next good one instead. The table marks it ‘Rahu Kaal’.

चौघड़िया ज्योतिष की एक लोक-प्रचलित पद्धति है, आगम का कोई नियम नहीं। फिर भी जैन समाज में — विशेषकर गुजरात, राजस्थान और मालवा में — यात्रा, व्यापार के मुहूर्त, गृह-प्रवेश एवं मांगलिक कार्यों के लिए इसे व्यापक रूप से देखा जाता है। धर्म-आराधना, सामायिक और स्वाध्याय के लिए हर समय शुभ है। / Choghadiya is a popular convention of jyotish, not a rule of the agams. All the same it is widely consulted in the Jain community — in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Malwa especially — for travel, business openings, house-warmings and family ceremonies. For worship, samayik and study, every hour is a good one.
